P.S. 84 Cell Phone Policy 25-26

Purpose

This policy ensures that cell phones and other personal electronic devices are collected, stored, and managed safely during the school day, while maintaining open lines of communication between families and the school in case of emergency.

COLLECTION & STORAGE

  • Collection at Arrival: Upon entering the school building, all student cell phones and electronic devices will be placed in secure pouches provided by the school.
  • Storage During the School Day: Secure pouches will remain locked and stored in a designated collection area for the duration of the school day.
  • Return at Dismissal: Students will receive their devices back at the end of the school day, before dismissal.
  • Early Dismissal Procedure: Students who have an approved early dismissal must report to the main office before departure. A staff member will unlock the student’s secure pouch and return their device directly to them prior to leaving the building.

COMMUNICATION (STUDENT & SCHOOL)

● Parent/Guardian Communication With the School: Families may contact the school directly at 718-278-1918 in case of emergency or urgent circumstances. Calls will be routed through the main office, and messages will be delivered promptly to the student.

● Student Access to Phones: In the event of an emergency or exigent circumstance, students may request to use the school phone located in the main office. A staff member will provide access and support the student in contacting their parent or guardian.

● Automated Communication System: The school uses Class Dojo to communicate important updates to families, including emergency notifications.

Compliance

All students are expected to follow this policy. Non-compliance may result in disciplinary measures in accordance with the Chancellor’s Regulations and the school’s discipline code.

Consequences for Violations:

To ensure fairness and consistency, we have implemented a Three-Strike system:

First Offense: The teacher will address the issue, and consequences will be determined at their discretion. This may include a gentle reminder, a warning, or confiscation of the device for the remainder of the class.

Second Offense: School administration will contact the student’s parents or guardians to discuss the policy violation and work together on a solution.

Third Offense: The student’s parents or guardians will be required to come to the school to retrieve the device. Additionally, the student will not be permitted to bring any electronic device to school for four weeks.

We deeply appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our students, parents, and staff. By working together, we can create a positive and distraction-free environment that allows all students to focus on learning and personal growth.
